Dramatic triple height interior in Museum Küppersmühle Duisburg

MKM Museum Küppersmühle transforms a former grain mill into a museum for modern and contemporary German art. Herzog & de Meuron retained the industrial character of the original brick buildings, adding an extension that echoes their materiality and scale. Inside, monumental staircases and raw architectural details create a dialogue between the site’s industrial past and its new cultural life.

In the secluded Alpine valley of Switzerland stands La Congiunta, Peter Märkli’s uncompromising concrete structure completed in 1992. Commissioned to house the sculptures of Swiss artist Hans Josephsohn, the museum's form embodies minimalism rooted in an engagement with materiality, light, and space.

The Soulages Museum designed by RCR Arquitectes bridges Rodez’s historic centre with its contemporary districts. Its restrained cubic forms and carefully placed openings draw from Aveyron’s traditional fenestras. Clad in weathering steel, the building evolves with time while reflecting the dark, textured works of Pierre Soulages, who was born in Rodez and whose work forms the heart of the museum’s collection.
