Donald Judd – The Chinati Foundation

The Chinati Foundation was founded in 1986 by artist Donald Judd as a radically different kind of museum — one where art would remain permanently installed in direct relationship with architecture and the surrounding landscape. Located on a vast former military site, the foundation transformed abandoned barracks into long term homes for large scale artworks. Judd believed that constantly moving artworks between museums and exhibitions weakened their meaning, and wanted Chinati to become a place where works could exist exactly as intended.

The foundation’s permanent collection centers around works by Judd, including his iconic concrete sculptures stretching across the Texas landscape. Other major installations include works by Dan Flavin, John Chamberlain, Robert Irwin, and other influential contemporary artists. Judd believed that art should never feel detached from its surroundings, and Chinati became an embodiment of that philosophy.
